Eli's Good Attitude

From October 24, 2010

So I was reading I Samuel, chapter 3 (of the Holy Bible), and that’s the chapter were God calls to Samuel as a boy and Samuel thinks that it’s Eli calling to him.  Eli sets that straight and God proceeds to tell Samuel that God is going to punish Eli’s house because of their iniquity.

So naturally Samuel doesn’t want to tell Eli this (talk about being the bearer of bad news), but Eli wants to hear it (and he has a right to know, of course - why else would God tell Samuel?), so Samuel tells Eli.  And in verse 18:

“Then Samuel told [Eli] everything, and hid nothing from him.  And [Eli] said, ‘It is the Lord.  Let Him do what seems good to Him.’”

I just love this.  Samuel is more or less telling Eli that he’s getting screwed, and Eli just kind of accepts it.  Imagine if we all had this attitude in regards to everything God does.  Accepting that God knows better than us and going with whatever happens.  It’s not always as dramatic as being judged forever for our iniquity, but whatever God throws our way, to humble ourselves to have that attitude about it…I feel like that’s important.

Just some food for thought.
